FAQs
Engineered Wood Flooring VS. Solid Wood Flooring - Key Differences
Engineered wood flooring is made with a real wood top layer bonded to a stable plywood base, offering durability and resistance to humidity and temperature changes.
Solid wood flooring is a single piece of hardwood, prized for its authenticity but more sensitive to environmental conditions.
Engineered wood is ideal for underfloor heating and variable climates, while solid wood suits spaces with stable conditions.
What is the 'top layer' on wood floors and why is it important?
The top layer, also known as the wear layer, is the visible surface of the board made from real wood. It determines the appearance and texture of the floor and can be sanded and refinished multiple times, depending on its thickness. A thicker top layer (ideally 4-6mm) ensures greater durability and a longer lifespan for your flooring.
What is a 'bevel' edge and what does it mean for the look of your wood floors?
A bevel edge refers to the angled edge of a wood flooring board.
A bevel is a small groove or V-shape between boards when laid, highlighting the individual planks.
Bevels can be on two sides (long edges) or all four sides.
They add depth and definition to the floor, enhancing its visual appeal and giving a more distinct plank effect.
What is Wood Grading and what's the importance when choosing a wood floor?
Grading refers to the visual characteristics of wood, such as knots, colour variation, and grain patterns. Common grades include:
- Prime Grade: Smooth and uniform with minimal knots, perfect for sleek, modern designs.
- Select Grade: Small knots and slight colour variation for a refined, balanced look.
- Classic Grade: Larger knots and noticeable variation, providing a natural and true characterful appearance.
- Rustic or Barn Grade: Heavy character with large knots, cracks, and significant texture, ideal for a country or vintage style.
The cleaner the board, the more expensive it tends to be. Choose a grade that suits your design preferences and budget.
What's the difference begtween an Oil vs. Lacquer finish for your wood flooring?
Oil and lacquer are both sealers applied as top coats to protect wooden floors.
Oil creates a natural, breathable surface that can be repaired easily and, with proper maintenance, ages beautifully, growing in character over time.
Lacquer forms a tough, protective layer on the surface, requiring less maintenance but is harder to repair if scratched. For high-traffic areas, 2-component lacquers are an excellent choice, offering extreme durability and long-lasting performance.
What's the difference between Unfinished VS. Pre-Finished wood flooring?
Unfinished wood flooring is installed, then sanded and stained if required, and sealed on-site, offering complete customisation of colour and finish, tailored to your space.
Prefinished wood flooring comes ready to install with a factory-applied finish, saving time and reducing on-site work.
However, some of the finishes on prefinished wood floors will be more difficult to repair and match if damage occurs.
Choose unfinished wood flooring for a bespoke look or prefinished for faster, more efficient installation.
